What Inspired You to Write Your Book?
I wrote this book because, when I went looking for help, I couldn’t find one quite like it. I’d finally made the decision to get serious about dropping a lifetime of bad, unhelpful habits and developing new, healthy, happiness-inducing habits and I wanted a map to guide me. I wanted an outline that showed which areas in my life to focus on and I wanted advice on how best to approach each area. I wanted to know some of the best books and blogs to read, what techniques others were using successfully and which teachers and guides to trust. I needed to discern between those that were actually effective and those that were just marketed effectively.
I needed to create a simple program that would keep me on track to my goals but that also worked within the structure of my life. Like you, I am busy with work, family, friends and responsibilities. Its not as if I can drop everything and head to a health spa or ashram for three months of self-transformation! In a sea of motivational books, diets, exercise regimens, Oprah’s greatest these and Dr. Phil’s latest those, I didn’t know where to start.
I wished I had one book that had filtered and distilled some of the best resources out there – proven, effective methods of self-development so I could just get started.
Well, I didn’t find a book quite like that, though I did find lots of other books and blogs that helped. I also tried several diets and exercise programs, took online courses, met with personal trainers and local groups, got advice from doctors, therapists, health and beauty specialists and various alternative practitioners. And here, several years later a healthier, happier, confident and more knowledgable me decided to write that book I was looking for when I began this journey.
This book is a practical guide with specific, credible information that you can put to use right now. It’s not filled with theories, statistics, poetry and fluffy, feel-good platitudes. It’s designed to work within your real life, which, if you’re anything like me, is most likely pretty busy.
I realized if I tried to address too many issues all at once, that I would easily become overwhelmed and discouraged. I needed to focus on a few key areas of my life and adopt a few simple, keystone habits (more on those later) that would be easy to stick to. I consciously put my focus on adopting new healthy habits rather than trying to break old, unhealthy habits. It seemed an easier, more positive approach that avoided the trap of negative self-judgement.
Also, I wanted results that didn’t require a tremendous amount of time and brain power. I gave up the false notion of overnight, dramatic success and sought deeper, permanent change instead. What I really wanted were new, simple, healthy habits that would carry throughout my life. I just needed to pick my battles and my weapons of choice.
