What Inspired You to Write Your Book?
I've always been fascinated with death, and reapers are an extension of that. They're straddling both worlds. They're a part of our world, to the extent that they have to reap souls here, but they are very much a part of the Underworld. When the publishing company I co-founded decided to put together an anthology with the theme "dudes in distress" (yep, that was the actual idea someone put forth), I got the idea of a reaper royally screwing up and falling in love in the process. "Reaper Girl" had been in my head for awhile too, and the two ideas collided. I immediately fell in love with both Leliel and Rick and decided to continue their story in book 2, Fireborn, and book 3, The Vanishing (forthcoming).
How Did You Come up With Your Characters?
My characters are created as they hit the page. The only idea I had for Leliel was that she was a Grim Reaper, was a bit on the snarky side, did not know about modern life or love (she's three hundred years old), and lost her mother and brother in a fire. All this just…was, I guess. I don't do character sheets or interviews or anything. I just think about what my characters might be like and go from there.
Rick also came about that way. I pictured him as a guy in his 20s, kind of a bad boy type with black hair streaked blue. And pissed off once he learns what Leliel did and what he was about to become. The rest just happened. Magic.
