How is Writing In Your Genre Different from Others?
Writing for children is often considered a good place for the novice writer to start, but in reality, the genre is both difficult and demanding.

DIFFICULT because of limitations such as grade-appropriate vocabulary, sentence structure, concept, or presentation (the need for white space and illustrations). Entire books have been written on each of these subjects.
DEMANDING because children’s books have a dual audience.

The child wants a story that is exciting or compelling or fun, as well as easy to read.

The parent/educator wants the story to have some intrinsic value. Many use the story as a springboard for discussion and teaching about traits such as generosity, friendship, or compassion.

What Advice Would You Give Aspiring Writers?
Read—widely and deeply. Read in genres you enjoy; re-read books you admire; try to read well-known works that don’t immediately appeal to you.

Study your craft. Take writing courses, whether in person, online, or from books. Follow good writing blogs. Try to use what you’re learning to analyze the books you’re reading.

Write—every day, no matter the subject. Setting up a schedule for studying and writing will yield encouraging results.
Don’t ever give up! Follow your dream and work to make it come true.

What Inspired You to Write Your Book?
One spring, I heard the rare Pine Barrens Treefrogs singing, wonk-wonk-wonk, and I held one of the tiny creatures in my hand. A story came to mind as I asked myself, “Could anything so tiny also be brave? What adventures might he have?”

About the Author:
Adventure, mystery, and wild creatures all play a part in Gloria Repp’s many books for children. She grew up in the Hawaiian Islands and the Pacific Northwest, and it was there she learned a love for wilderness that pervades her stories. During the years she spent raising her three children and writing books, she also taught creative writing and worked as an editor.

These days, she takes makes frequent trips to explore the forests in New Jersey’s Pine Barrens, and while she hikes, she is plotting the next story in her frog-fiction series for young readers, TALES OF FRIENDSHIP BOG.
