What Inspired You to Write Your Book?
I was taken by life in the 18th century in India, and intrigued by the wealthy nabobs who returned rich from there. I was also very interested in horse breeding in those days, which was when the British thoroughbred began to come into its own. A friend’s son loaned me lots of books about horse racing and horses from which I learned what I needed to use. To thank him, I took his surname for Chiddingly’s trainer Tidmarsh.
How Did You Come up With Your Characters?
I was driving around Sussex one day and saw a signpost : Chiddingly Stud. Immediately I had the basis for a story. The Chiddingly Stud was the concept – a horsemad hero who was into breeding race horses. That led me to invent his perfect heroine, equally horsemad and as thoroughly ill-tempered as he is himself!
