What Inspired You to Write Your Book?
Most epic fantasy series describe the buildup or course of a grand war or cataclysm. They also tend to be set in worlds that are fairly static socially and technologically. I wanted to chronicle the social and technological aftermath of the 'great war.'
In the 'Empire' series, all common soldiers were awarded land and citizenship in lieu of coin – increasing the size of the middle class ten-fold overnight. Bicycles, introduced for military service, are now everywhere. Signal towers send messages thousands of miles in mere days. Printed books are exploding in popularity. All this is placing immense social stress on an already troubled nation.
How Did You Come up With Your Characters?
The Point of View characters represent a cross section of the Empire.
Tia belongs to a wealthy mercantile family that hopes to secure their status by marrying her into the aristocracy. Towards this end, Tia underwent years of education at the University of Solace, becoming proficient in everything from languages to finance. Tia is the glue that binds the other main characters together.
Rebecca, Tia's female confident, maid, and personal minstrel, comes from the Empire's lower orders.
Sir Peter Cortez, Tia's knightly protector, is a bastard born knight weary of shedding blood on distant battlefields – but his prospects are scant.
Kyle, Tia's oafish carriage driver, is a former peasant with a knack for sorcery who got drafted into the imperial legions. He came out of the war with a head full of nightmares.
