How is Writing In Your Genre Different from Others?
For me, the most important difference about writing children’s books (from many other types of books) is the fact that I am able to add pictures. My drawings are completely intertwined with the development of the story and my creative process. My stories would not exist without them.
What Advice Would You Give Aspiring Writers?
Work hard but don’t try to be perfect. Get in there, get your hands dirty. Self-publish something (anyone can!) and see what response you get. I think this is the best way to learn and hone your craft.
What Inspired You to Write Your Book?
I think there’s something very human (or frog-like) about trying to mold ourselves to the expectations of others. I find true friendship to be the antidote this. True friendship is the place where we can rejoice in being ourselves. This is what Frog and Pickles discover in their friendship with Vernon, the little fox. Vernon delights in the masquerade of characters that Frog and Pickles pretend to be, because, in the end, he knows who they really are. They’re his friends.

Kirstin has a BA in English from Vassar College and an MFA in Creative Writing from San Francisco State University where she is also an academic and personal counselor. She lives in San Francisco with her husband and one-year-old son.
“Although I began as a short-story writer, my work has evolved into what I now call my “illustrated stories.” These stories contain a revolving cast of existential, furry creatures, struggling with the timeless topics of what it means to be a good friend, how to cope with one’s imperfections, and how to lead a life well-lived.
After completing my MFA in Creative Writing and struggling for several years to eek out worthy sentences, I began drawing pictures again. Somehow, adding this visual component rekindled my creative spirit and returned me to a more natural place as a writer.
