How is Writing In Your Genre Different from Others?
I’ve written in a few genres, but I always come back to fantasy or speculative fiction because I love the freedom of the genre. In fantasy fiction, there are no limits on your creativity. You can create new worlds, new rules, and then break all of them if you want to. There’s something quite special about what comes from an imagination that isn’t chained down by reality. Plus, the adventures are great fun to write.
What Advice Would You Give Aspiring Writers?
Write every day, even if it’s just a few hundred words. Creativity is like a muscle. If you work it out regularly enough, it can do superhuman things.
Also, spend some time learning about editing. I see learning about editing as a rite of passage for most authors.You need to understand about driving your main conflict, setting up your story structure and using active sentences. It takes time, but it’s worth it in the long run because you will tell better stories.
Avoid people who offer you the moon and the stars, but don’t deliver anything. Words are lovely things, but they are often used by con men to steal from you. Judge every business proposition by the reality of it not the spin on it, and leave poetic promises for the pages of fiction.
Finally, don’t let anything make you give up. The publishing world has some disturbing things in it. Get over them and move on. Keep writing if you love it, and don’t let anything get in your way. Success isn’t easy or even a sure thing, but you keep going no matter what because writing is what you love, and nothing can take that away from you unless you let it.

I’ve always loved the ocean. Being near it often feels like a magical experience to me, so my inspiration was the magic of the ocean on this story.
