“It’s Treasure Island meets The Outsiders… a grand adventure not to be missed.” –Haris Orkin, award-winning author of the James Flynn Escapades
Abandoned as an infant, 15-year-old Bonnie Hartwright doesn’t know who she really is. And that just might get her killed. After her latest scrape with the law, foster girl Bonnie is abruptly carted off to a “reform sailing camp” on the Carolina coast. There, she discovers the camp is actually a training compound of a centuries-old secret society, The Brigands of the Compass Rose, all of whose members are descendants of notorious woman pirate, Mary Read. Bonnie and her fellow teen internees, troubled teens and denizens of the digital age, must now master the old ways of sword and sail as they prepare to battle a mysterious enemy and a 300-hundred-year-old pirate curse that threatens all mankind. During weeks of training, Bonnie discovers a legacy steeped in ancient magic, where dreams are precognitive and warn of a dark destiny long in the making. As she opens up to her newfound tribe, Bonnie finds herself drawn to both Wilder, a charismatic thief, and Reed, the grandson of the group’s leader, a boy who carries the weight of a family legacy on his shoulders.
But a secret is being withheld from Bonnie, one that could end up proving lethal. Before it’s too late, she must uncover the truth about herself or face certain death in a watery grave.
In The Brigands of the Compass Rose, Runkle and Webb put a modern-day twist on the swashbuckling page-turners of the past, blending action, romance, and a heavy dose of black magic into a thrilling young adult adventure like no other.

What Inspired You to Write Your Book?
We have a relative who works with Foster children. His experience is that these are wonderful kids who have been abandoned and written off by society. We wanted to tell a story about these lost kids finding their self-worth and purpose. They do this when they discover they are of a pirate bloodline. And they realize and tap into their talents to basically save the world. Along the way they gain self-esteem and find their tribe – the place they truly belong.
How Did You Come up With Your Characters?
We began with the true historical characters, pirates Mary Reed and Anne Bonny – women who had crossed into a man's world of high seas adventure at a time when women were expected to stay at home. We wondered what happened to them and their descendants. We then thought about who would be the descendants of these infamous pirates and having knowledge of the foster world, we came up with characters that populated that world. Kids labelled as troublemakers by a society that didn't understand them. Of course, they would have pirate blood. From there the characters sprang. All lost kids who had great potential that the world refused to see. But then they discover their heritage and in doing so find their worth, their destinies and their tribe.
