What Inspired You to Write Your Book?
I was so inspired by own experiences at sea in storms and hurricanes, and knew I just HAD to try to tell others something of what it was like. I was also hugely impressed by the skill of my co-author, Captain Tim Schofield, and the incredible bravery and endurance of earlier sailors. I also loved finding the pictures!

… we went in through the narrow gap in the reef, only a few feet, maybe inches on each side, these jagged cruel fearsome fatal rocks. And we looked at it and we’re amazed at the skill of the captain. What a relief as we got through to the quiet green water of the enclosed lagoon. Calm. Safe.
Safe!
The captain quietly lowered his anchor an we only needed to wait for the lighter to take us and then the goods ashore. We knew we would be welcomed with dancing and a feast – that’s the South Pacific for you.
But – the captain listened to the weather news, and the wind began to whistle.
We were still aboard, happy to be safely near land, when we heard the captain say
“If the weather forecast had reached me earlier I would never have come in”.
I was amazed. Surely it was best to have come in to the safety of the lagoon, away from the wild deep sea!
Then the captain pointed to the shore. It was littered with the wrecks of large ships. The small ones had already been pounded to bits.
He explained that in a hurricane, or any bad storm, the only safe place is at sea, Here, we would be driven by the wind onto the land and perish.
So we must struggle against the odds to stay where we were, not be driven, like them, onto the shore …
