Rose Hips is a nostalgia-bomb portrait of Home- as it exists in place, in ourselves, and within the ones we love. This collection acknowledges life’s universal struggles and eases them with messages of hope and acceptance. Jessica Highstreet’s debut poetry collection will resonate with anyone who has experienced growth through hardship.

What Inspired You to Write Your Book?
Rose Hips is my first book. I self-published it in June of 2020, when the pandemic left me with lots of time on my hands. I was calling my grandma a lot that spring since neither of us were getting out much, and she kept encouraging me to finally publish my poems. When I started creating the collection, I knew I had to do it. My book became a road map of my journey to finding identity and growing into my most authentic self. I think that's something everyone searches for and others will hopefully feel a little less alone in that journey when they read the poetry in Rose Hips.

Rose Hips
n. – The small berry-like fruit of a rose bush, especially the wild kind.
From seed to bud
Opening and flowering
Wilting and shedding petals
The rose dies
So that the fruit may grow
Petaled Too Tightly
If I had another name
Would I be sweet?
Would I be plucked up?
Would my thorns protect me?
If I had another name
Hope in the Distance
Who's that girl?
She has bright eyes
Endless dreams
Ambition erupting from her ears
The world is nothing but beautiful
Everything ugly is simply misunderstood
Naïve, free girl- I miss you
Who's that girl?
Her eyes seem sad
She wants to sleep
And not be called upon
If the world would roll over
And never need her again
Maybe she'd get some rest
Tired, tattered girl- I'm so sorry
Who's that girl?
Her face is a mystery
I don't know what she wants
Or what would make her happy
I want to imagine she's strong
Another beautiful piece of the world
Standing up to all the fear that would defeat her
Brave, new girl- I look forward to meeting you
