Prepper Mountain by Chris Bostic
School’s getting out for the summer, and Zach has finally worked up the courage to ask Katelyn to walk home with him—only to find the Feds parked in his driveway again. His unemployed accountant father is an outspoken critic of the recent default on the crushing national debt, which brings on most of their problems with the law. But his mother is the real complication when it comes to bringing potential girlfriends over to the house. She’s a fanatical prepper.
Though Zach can’t see the imminent danger, his parents whisk his family away to the Great Smoky Mountains in case the entire country crumbles into martial law. When the new regime’s drones circle like buzzards and the bombs start falling, someone has to be the resistance….

What Inspired You to Write Your Book?
I tend to turn innocent, fun-filled family vacations into epic disaster stories. They tend toward the dystopian side, such as this novel that features societal collapse. In this case, it's a severe tightening of freedoms along with a default on the national debt — something completely believable nowadays.
How Did You Come up With Your Characters?
I like to base my characters on people I know, so that way I have a good idea who exactly I am writing about. They seem more realistic when it's someone I know, rather than someone I created from scratch. But the names are always changed.

Maddie finished pulling her long hair into a ponytail, leaving a few strands loose to frame her ghastly face—probably on purpose. She wasn’t completely obsessed with contrasting black and pale like some kids. She was too worried about being pretty and popular to do all that. “Not all vampires need to stay out of the sun, you know.”
“Good, then I’m pulling the blinds.” I strode over the window and grabbed the cord. Before I could give it a yank, a sharp voice startled me.
“I wouldn’t do that if I were you,” Mom said.
“Jeez, Mom. You scared the crap outta me.”
“Better now than later,” she replied. “You never were a fan of taking a dump in the woods.”
“Mom, gross,” Maddie said.
“Point taken, darling,” Mom noted. “Anyway, you two forget that I was wanting to speak to you?”
