A toxic smog hangs permanently over twenty-first-century New York City. The revolutionary movements of the late eighteenth century never materialized, and the great city is part of a vast British Empire. Its teeming underclass struggles daily to survive. Odette Speex is among them. A talented ballerina, her defiant spirit chafes at the unyielding tyranny of the nobility. Unbeknownst to her, she lives in a terribly distorted world. One created by an unscrupulous fellowship. They are the reason her genius twin brother, Odell, is acting more than usually cold and distant. He draws Odette into a time-traveling conspiracy that saw the destruction of the American Revolution and turned back the advances of the Enlightenment. Thrust back to 1757 London, Odette must avert the murder of an important colonial diplomat and stop the shadowy brotherhood from destroying history’s march toward progress.

How is Writing In Your Genre Different from Others?
Since I combined a few genres with this one book I can attest to the fact historical fiction is quite difficult. Mainly because one has to be careful with the facts and is always striving for historical accuracy. As well, creating an historically authentic experience for the reader requires quite a bit of research. I often had to do significant research just for brief mention of a carriage or dress, language, etc. On the other hand, alternate history is really a free-for-all. I could mess with the world as much as I wanted. After all, its alternate. The same goes for time travel. Once you develop a theory and vocabulary of time travel, you just have to be consistent with how it’s applied. Because really, time travel doesn’t make much sense.
What Advice Would You Give Aspiring Writers?
Read. Read what you love and always try different types of books and stories. I find that reading enriches my own writing. And that I turn again and again to those books and authors that inspire me.
What Inspired You to Write Your Book?
It started out as a bit of a joke between my sister and me. We are both writers, and looking at the popular genres we thought it would be fun to write a book that combined many of them. Well, I ended up taking it seriously. Thus, “Odette Speex” was born. I call it a genre mash-up of alternate history (steampunk light), time travel, historical fiction and romance.
It is my first published work and fiction and I did have a lot of fun writing. And I hope you have fun reading it.
About the Author:
Padgett Lively is a pen name. I don’t use my own because, let’s face it, Padgett Lively is a pretty cool name.
I’m from California and started writing about 10 years ago, although I have been a reader all my life. Well, at least since the age of six. Like so many my literary tastes were set early, and I remember fondly the books of my youth. I enjoy finding new works, but in my writing I’m drawn to a rather descriptive, adventurous prose.
“Odette Speex” is my first published work of fiction. I am currently working on a couple of projects. One of which is, “Odell Speex: Time Traitors Book 2.” Where I hope to deliver another fast-paced, time-traveling, historical adventure.
