The passage from birth to death is a journey that binds us all… In this debut anthology entitled Marching with a Broken Shadow, readers are invited to embark on that journey; delving profoundly into their innermost thoughts and prevailing feelings – from the deepest and darkest layers of hurt and confusion, to the most hypnotic forms of happiness and dream. Take the quest with the central character, and look forward to exploring, with reminiscence and wonder, the voyage we call life, the ending we know as death, and all that lies in between.

What Inspired You to Write Your Book?
Since studying William Blake as a teenager, I experimented with writing poetry. This hobby expanded into a means of catharsis and reflection as I cared for my sick mother, and used the mode of writing to rationalise my experiences and contextualise my emotions. In 2017, my mum passed away, and I discovered that she too was a writer of poetry – finding her hidden poems when sorting through her belongings. At this point, I set out to build upon the random collection of writing I had accumulated, and turn it into a work that was thematically linked and conceptually realised… a work that was not merely for self expression or rationalisation, but rather, for a broader readership, and to tell a greater story. This work is what became known as Marching with a Broken Shadow.
How Did You Come up With Your Characters?
There is a central character in my book that guides the narrative structure and sequence, and provides an overarching sense of narration and chronology; however whilst the synopsis invites readers to take the journey with the central character, my hope is that as people read the book they themselves become the central character. They themselves become the person who is journeying within the emotional rollercoaster that guides the books narrative; and I hope this is achieved based on the book owning a sense of relatability and connectiveness that allows readers to associate with the emotional gravitas, and the binding elements of the story – struggles, triumphs, and everything else in between.
