What Inspired You to Write Your Book?
My Mennonite grandparents fled from Ukraine in 1920s during the Russian civil war. After visiting Ukraine in 2014, I decided their story needed to be told. But since I didn't know their entire story, I decided to create a fictional story based on historical facts.
How Did You Come up With Your Characters?
I visualize my protagonist and the co-protagonist as my grandmothers when they were young girls. I keep a photo on my desk to remind me of their characteristics. Other characters are composites of people I know. The villains are drawn from real historical persons.
