What Inspired You to Write Your Book?
My grandparents fled Ukraine during the Russian civil war. When I visited Ukraine in 2014, I was overwhelmed by the dark history. The German speaking Mennonite communities in southern Ukraine were ethnically cleansed from the land during the twentieth century. This is a story that needs to be told for a new generation.
How Did You Come up With Your Characters?
I named my female protagonist and co-protagonist after my grandmothers. I tried to imagine who they were and how they as teenagers coped with the difficult cirucmstances during those dark years. My co-male protagonist has characteristics of people I know. But his story is entirely fictional.
