A jogger in his mid-50s, Tommy Barlow, is found without identification, beaten and left for dead. When he wakes after 4 days he believes he is 23, his last memory, popping down the shops for milk for his wife Sally. Tommy cannot recall the last 32 years. After Sally declared Tommy dead, she remarried, emigrating to Australia with a son Tommy had never seen. Now a stranger, Jennifer Morris, comes forward saying she’s the mother of his three teenage children and wants her husband back home. Written for NaNoWriMo 2013, the story is family drama involving themes of infidelity, first love and romance. Adult themes but there is no sex and few examples of profanity. It is a fairly lighthearted contemporary English Romance.
Targeted Age Group:: Adult
How is Writing In Your Genre Different from Others?
I believe this genre of lighthearted contemporary romantic fiction is what I want to write about and feel that I am where I am most comfortable. I don’t think there are many male writers writing romantic fiction, which I feel doesn’t need to be erotic to be entertaining.
What Advice Would You Give Aspiring Writers?
I have only been self publishing for 14 months and this is only my 3rd novel. Most of my 19 books are available on Smashwords free of charge, my downloads amounting to just under 10,000; so I am hardly in a position of advising aspiring writers from any position of sound footing. What I will say is this: write what interests you. Only through believing in what you write will your passions come through. No point in writing what you think other people want to read if your heart is not in it. They will know and not thank you for it. Try different genres. I have written some edgy romances more sexy than usual and unexpected endings. I have tried vampires/werewolves, science fiction, tragedy, plays, humour, ghost stories, historical romance. Try flash fiction, drabbles, short stories and drabbles; some stories simply cannot be turned into novels. Most of all though, have fun with your writing, share it, get people to comment – and the best way to do that is comment on others and don’t get discouraged if they don’t. Bear in mind that writers are solitary, insular creatures, who immerse themselves in their characters, neglecting themselves and others, agree? Oh, maybe just me, then….
Author Bio:
Tony Spencer has self-published three novels, nine novellas and eight short stories or collections of short stories on Smashwords. He has lived in Yateley, Hampshire, about 35 miles west of London, for over 30 years, married with two boys and grandfather to two little angels. For over 40 years he was a printer, typesetter and proofreader, currently occupied with major trunk road and motorway maintenance. Was also a sports programme editor and local newspaper sports writer for almost 20 years. He is now concentrating on fiction, novels, novellas and short stories, mostly lightly romantic and humourous.
Written for NaNoWriMo 2013, I wanted a simple open plot with lots of possibilities and generally allowed the characters to dictate the flow. I had wanted to write a story about amnesia, and the impacts it has on the sufferer and those closest to the victim.
