What Inspired You to Write Your Book?
I was on a holiday in Perth and I loved the beaches. They were just so wide and beautiful – similar to my home in Adelaide, but they also felt so different. It was this feeling of loving the place, but not quite belonging that made it the perfect location for my story. The other location – Vancouver is a place I went to as a child and loved. It was a long time ago, so the distance between the two experiences helped create the right feel for the story.
How Did You Come up With Your Characters?
The main character – Callie has a bit of me in her. Some of her experiences come from me (the volleyball games are pretty real). other parts just grew as she developed.
The family that become friends (Jack, Emily and of course Blake) could well be any Australian family. They are competitive and sporty, but deep down underneath all the arguments they would do anything for each other.
The other characters at school and volleyball have drifted in and out of my personal experiences. I have of course been creative with their personalities.

The ball hit the ground with an ear piercing slap. Callie’s world became one of silence. She could feel her heart pumping furiously, but it made no sound. She began to feel dizzy. Callie sank to the ground as the last year of her life flashed before her eyes. Finally the thumping of her heart broke through the silence. The sudden noise was deafening, people were cheering and celebrating, while others lay on the court completely exhausted. Callie took a breath. It was all over!
