About Simon Gjeroe:
I am a self-confessed nerd when it comes to China and everything Chinese. I have been interested in China since I saw the movie “The Last Emperor” as a thirteen-year old. During my Chinese studies, I spent two years at Sichuan University in Chengdu, where I lived from 1995 to 1998. That is where I also met my future wife, Fu. After graduating in Chinese and Modern East Asian Studies, I moved to Beijing for work, and, after a few years, also married and settled down with Fu and eventually became the proud father of two boys here. A fluent Mandarin speaker, I have lived in China for more than a decade. I have written articles and books on Chinese travel, food, culture, history and politics. This is my third book. I now live in Denmark with my family, now including one made in Denmark. I teach Chinese Studies and History.
What inspires you to write?
Living in and working with China for 25 years and my everyday life there
What authors do you read when you aren’t writing?
Peter Hessler’s ‘Country Driving’, Patrick French’s ‘Tibet Tibet’, Paul French’s ‘City of Devils’, Fuchsia Dunlop’s ‘Shark’s Fin and Sichuan Pepper: A Sweet-Sour Memoir of Eating in China’, and Frank Dikötter’s ‘The Tragedy of Liberation’ just to name a few.
Tell us about your writing process.
My process is quite slow. I work with many ideas at the same time. Write down tonnes of ideas and sentences on my phone which at some point hopefully turns into a first chapter of some kind.
What advice would you give other writers?
Just do it
How did you decide how to publish your books?
Until now, I have only published with a publisher. With more experience, I would maybe consider self-publishing also.
What do you think about the future of book publishing?
I think too much is being published at the moment and I do believe that the number of books being published will go down.
What genres do you write?: non-fiction, history
What formats are your books in?: Both eBook and Print
