About Sandra Farris:
I live in Tucson Arizona, and I retired from a government job to finally fulfill my dream of being a published writer.
I began writing at an early age after making up stories for my younger sisters (3 and 5 at the time) and continued writing as a hobby until my 3 sons came along. I wrote intermittently until I retired, then it became full time. I have five novels and three short story e-books published since then.
My son and I made a book trailer for one of the books, Can You Hear the Music?, which has won two awards: Books ’N Sync best book trailer, March 2012 and The International Movie Trailer Film Festival’s Best Book Trailer 2013.
I am a cancer survivor, which aside from my sons, is probably my greatest accomplishment, then my writing.
I love the desert southwest and it’s distinct beauty. I dabble in amateur photography, love to read, travel (especially cruises) and have been lucky enough to travel to several countries abroad.
What inspires you to write?
Sometimes a conversation I hear, a piece in the paper, something from my past, or just sitting daydreaming. I got the idea for one of my books from visiting an orphanage my senior year in high school.
Tell us about your writing process.
I am a seat of the pants writer. I never liked outlines, or was very good at them even in school. I do create character sketches once I start the story. I don’t always use the character because sometimes it just doesn’t work for the story.
For Fiction Writers: Do you listen (or talk to) to your characters?
I listen to my characters. I can actually hear what they would sound. A good example of that is the dialogue featuring a hobo in one of my books. When we cast for that character in my book trailer, I knew the minute the man walked in that he was my hobo before he even read for the part, because he looked like my mental image of him.
What advice would you give other writers?
Read, read, read and sit yourself down and write even though you don’t like what you just did. I used to write fan letters to my favorite actors to get warmed up. I tried humor in some and serious ones (hero worship)in others. It was difficult for me at first, but it did the trick. Turned on the juices, so to speak.
How did you decide how to publish your books?
The first four books I published I used a publisher. I was a novice and chose the wrong one, but I wanted my stories out there. I became frustrated with their reporting royalties among other things. After a lot of research, which I highly recommend, I self-published and haven’t regretted that decision since.
What do you think about the future of book publishing?
I’m not sure about the future of book publishing. I think it may get a little more difficult to get first books published, but beyond that, I don’t know. Haven’t really given it much thought.
