What inspires you to write?
God. I try to communicate his love to others through my writing by including inspirational passages in all of my stories.
Tell us about your writing process.
I’m more of a seat-of-the-pants kind of writer. The only outline I have is in my head, which could change depending on my characters. As far as the story goes, I have a beginning, middle and end that I think about before I even start. I never document character sketches which is funny because most people who have read my books think this is my strong suit. In fact, for my debut novel, my characters are so real one reader thought the book was based on a true story, which it was not. Usually, my characters are drawn from my own life, family or friends that I know.
For Fiction Writers: Do you listen (or talk to) to your characters?
I do listen and talk to my characters. I feel if I don’t think they could be real, then the reader won’t either.
What advice would you give other writers?
My advice to inspiring writers is to keep reading and writing. Pursue your potential with passion. Never let a day go by that you are not thinking about your story, your characters, a new scene, a new book. And be patient. Patience pays off.
How did you decide how to publish your books?
My debut novel was published by a Christian publisher. I self-published my others books. I felt I had more ownership and creativity through the whole process. It’s more time-consuming to self-publish, but I think the rewards are worth it.
What do you think about the future of book publishing?
The future of book publishing is fluid; however, I don’t think it will ever settle to one form or style as in the past. People like variety. Some prefer to read digital books and some prefer printed. I think there will always be room for both.
