About Robert Crudup:

What inspires you to write?
Writing fiction is a process that you should always take your time in creation. It is not a rush procedure but a very slow process to bring out your best creativity.
Tell us about your writing process.
I have been writing fiction for over twenty-five years. It is a warm, free, experience that let’s me be creative. Writing is an act that gives me the ability to see great stories by letting my mind become distant, exploratory, and inventive with characters.
For Fiction Writers: Do you listen (or talk to) to your characters?
Creating characters are like having children. They are born to you and you alone. They have to be molded into beings that will grow into well-rounded individuals who you want to leave a great impression on when they come of age. These characters are honed by the passing of each chapter. They find their growth with each passing strength, and eventually shows who will be stronger as the story unfolds. No character can succeed without the other co-characters. They are all entwined.
What advice would you give other writers?
When I first began to write, it was difficult to organize the characters. I couldn’t find a direction to go. I seem to hit a brick wall as I tried to bring cohesion to the multiple characters. To see an image down the road without forcing it. At first, early on, I was hitting my creative head into walls that refused to move. It would be years before I could bring a roundabout way to begin a story: find its middle ground: then conclude it with a brilliant flash. Writing from the thin air has to be a gift that you struggle with, and then one day, you wake up, and the characters all fall in line. Your story takes on a mind all on its own. That’s writing!
How did you decide how to publish your books?
That is a wonderful question and every time I am asked, I smile. In 2002, I met another writer, who introduced me to an urban publishing company in Brooklyn, New York. I was surprised when the owner of the company offered me $5,000. dollars for by my book! I was shock, happy, and confused all at the same time. It was that experience that pushed me to continue my crusade to continue writing, and, at this stage, begin self-publishing. If someone buys what you’ve created, then you know there is an outlet for you and your writing. The name of that paid first fiction book: “Blood Is Thicker Than Water.”
What do you think about the future of book publishing?
With the creation of E-book, Kindle, Android, these items will, and have, begun to phase out the hardcopy materials of our society. Five years from now, these things will grow even more in abundance! It is easier on the weight of the person carrying the large copy books. Whereas now, you have it on your cell phone.
