What inspires you to write?
It's a calling. Long ago I was shown that I'd reach more people through my writing than seminars. And you can go back to a book over and over to keep learning. That's a key – I'm inspired to write to inspire others to succeed, learn to live the life of their dreams and make our world a better place.
What authors do you read when you aren’t writing?
Of course, to be expected, the bible – it's crammed with amazing information, teachings, and astonishing life stories. As I'm an avid reader I have volumes of books of all kinds on theology, the mind, and all sorts of fascinating subjects all of which have shaped my writing. I also have all my books from my university days in Theology and Psychology. Plus, I have had the privilege of co-authoring some books with A Victor, an amazing author. Favourite book and author – ‘Lord of the Rings’ by Tolkien. As an author, I admire his sense of history and continuity and the wonder he created. I also love the prevailing theme of good triumphing because of honest, ordinary people choosing to make a difference.
Tell us about your writing process.
I walk and pray and listen when I'm honing a point in my writing. My books need to be inspired, so yes, prayer and listening play an important role as well as deep research. And not many people know this – walking and praying is a right-brain activity that releases creativity. And I have a special strategy that keeps me from writer's block – I work on a number of books at the same time. If I get stuck, on one, I work on another. And if I'm really stuck? I walk and pray and listen. When I'm working on a book, I'll start with a definite idea of what I'd like covered in the book. Once I start on my research for the book, my writing becomes organic – I let it grow and take on a life of it's own. I learn so much during this phase of my writing.
What advice would you give other writers?
Write top-quality, carefully researched content that makes a positive difference in the life of your reader. And always, always keep checking for typos as we all scotoma – we can overlook things (it's a brain thing). And every book I write is proofread by an expert in my field. Make sure your book is well-formatted, and remember, your cover is your window – make it full of impact and relevant.
How did you decide how to publish your books?
When I first started writing, I researched how publishers select and promote books and decided to take the self-publishing route. I like the flexibility, freedom and rewards this brings. My advice to new authors is to research carefully and decide which route you'll take while you're still writing your book. That way you can gear everything toward either self-publishing or a publisher. If you choose to self-publish, get to know the platform (like Amazon's KDP), enroll in one of the many free courses that will build your foundational knowledge. Treat increasing your knowledge base and skill set as a lifelong investment. Hone your writing by re-reading, re-writing, and polishing your work. Ask: 'who am I writing for?' and read your book from their perspective (remember they may not have your knowledge base, understanding or perspective).
What do you think about the future of book publishing?
Very exciting! The self-publishing industry continues double digit growth. We live in an information age and the opportunities to reach people around the world grow daily.
What genres do you write?: Self help, personal development, people development, science, psychology, faith based, christian, children's books, graphic novels (just starting on the last one)
What formats are your books in?: Both eBook and Print
