What inspires you to write?
It often stems from writing things I can't find in other books and a need to fill a gap in a subject that is often misunderstood.
What authors do you read when you aren’t writing?
One of my all-time favourite authors is Charles De Lint.
David Michie
Marion Zimmer Bradley
Peter Richelieu
Tell us about your writing process.
I'm a pantser by nature and my fiction writing often has a mind of its own and writes itself. With nonfiction, I am a bit more of a planner of the bones but then, the pantser will take over within those plans. Finding Scrivener has made it so much easier to write down all my random thoughts and not lose them. Oh, and a wet notepad in the shower is a must! It's where all my ideas kick in.
For Fiction Writers: Do you listen (or talk to) to your characters?
My characters talk through me. As an intuitive pantser I have an idea and then the story takes off and I follow it. Most of the time it happily surprises me where the narrative leads. It's a little challenging when the unlikeable characters talks through me, but I can get out of the way enough to write what comes and what I see and then shake them off later.
What advice would you give other writers?
Your voice and your way of weaving stories is unique. No one experiences things the way you do. Less is more so it is important to be concise. Write from your viewpoint and always get a good editor and proofreader before you consider submitting anything for publishing.
How did you decide how to publish your books?
Because my books are linked to my business, I have always wanted full control and copyright of my books under the umbrella of self-publishing. I always look to employ small business people for my needs be that editing, visuals, printing, etc. I think it's important that we support other creatives trying to make a living. For new authors, Reedsy is a great place to start with. Lots of helpful and experienced folk doing lots of good things. You can put up jobs, learn a lot and target editors, proofers etc.
What do you think about the future of book publishing?
To be honest. AI worries me. We creatives are not copies. We are originals.
What genres do you write?: speculative Fiction, non Fiction
What formats are your books in?: Both eBook and Print
