About Margaret Egrot:
I live in the UK, with my husband and a boisterous cairn terrier. My son is married and lives in Thailand. I write novels, short stories and plays. Some draw on my work with offenders, victims and vulnerable children and families; some are pure escapism. I enjoy walking, playing football with the dog (he’s very good despite his size) and swimming. I also go to the theatre and help out a a local community theatre.
What inspires you to write?
Sometimes I write because I think I have something to say. Sometimes I write to avoid doing more boring things – like housework.
Tell us about your writing process.
I write an outline, which I then largely ignore, or rather, I keep amending it every time I go off track. I often plan my next scene / chapter when I am in bed or walking the dog, or swimming length after length. Then make a few notes to remind myself.
For Fiction Writers: Do you listen (or talk to) to your characters?
Not really. I prefer to eavesdrop on them talking to each other.
What advice would you give other writers?
Read a lot, especially the kind of book you want to write.
How did you decide how to publish your books?
A writer friend gave me the contact details for Solstice publishing – and they offered me a contract.
What do you think about the future of book publishing?
Solstice is primarily an ebook publisher, and is growing rapidly. I think the days of the small print publisher are numbered.
