Interview with Author – Lisa Dawn Wadler

Lisa-Dawn-Wadler
About Lisa Dawn Wadler:
Lisa began writing after reading yet another romance novel where the heroine needed a man to rescue her from physical harm. While a firm believer in the strong alpha-male hero in any story, she wondered what would happen if that hero met a woman who was able to take care of herself physically. Using her several years of Tae Kwon Do training and mixing in time travel, her multi-award winning debut novel, The Draig’s Woman was born.

Lisa lives in the Chicago suburbs and is married to her high school sweetheart. They have two children and one very spoiled dog.

What inspires you to write?
I feel there is a shortage of strong capabale women in romance fiction. At least, I never found one when searching. After growing weary of another heroine needing to be saved by the hero, I decided to incorporate my personal martial arts experience into historical romance fiction. Time travel provided the vehicle to transport a modern gal into a time when women weren’t expected to be physically strong and yet really needed to be.

Tell us about your writing process.
Even when I began The Draig’s Woman, I knew there would be over five books in the Draig series. I have too many thoughts about what I would like to see happen for only one book. By having each book take place indepedent of the others, there is no need to read them in order. Each story is separate and unique characters, even if one clan. The spread of generation allows for the reader to hop in at any point. Hopefully, the hints and clan lore from the other books will inspire you to read the rest of the series.

I write in a free-flow. No formal outline, though I do know where i want the story to go and end. Sometimes how it gets there surprised me.

For Fiction Writers: Do you listen (or talk to) to your characters?
As a writer with a full time job, adolescent kids, husband and a dog, time to write is precious and limited. I know I need to carve time when the voices start progressing too far down the story line – I become worries i will forget plot twists and turns i plan to write.

What advice would you give other writers?
Keep writing, it is that simple. It took me years to find a publisher willing to take a change on me.

How did you decide how to publish your books?
Fate stepped in and helped. No publsiher answered my direct submisions. I kept entering RWA based contests in hopes of improving my work and for the chance to win and have an editor/publisher read my work. It finally happened!!

What do you think about the future of book publishing?
Given the success of some indie authors and the limited revenue from programs like Amazon Unlimited, I think more authors will stop using traditional publishers. More and more bookstores close every day – which breaks my heart – e-book are here to stay whether we like them or not.
