About Krysten Lindsay Hager:
Who knew all those embarrassing, cringe-y moments in middle school and high school could turn into a career? And who would have thought that daydreaming in math class would pay off down the road? Krysten Lindsay Hager writes about friendship, self-esteem, fitting in, frenemies, crushes, fame, falling in love, and values. She received her BA in English and master’s degree from the University of Michigan-Flint.
What inspires you to write?
I like to bring hope and happily ever afters to people. I've used reading to escape while going through tough times and now that I'm a writer, nothing makes me happier than hearing my work gave someone else a little escape.
What authors do you read when you aren’t writing?
F. Scott Fitzgerald, Sylvia Plath, Judy Blume, Cathy Hopkins, Kim Wright, and Leo Tolstoy.
Tell us about your writing process.
I create character sketches and use Pinterest boards to collect any bits of info on the characters I'm working with on all my stories. I am more of a pantser, but when writing a series I do have to have an idea of where the story is headed.
For Fiction Writers: Do you listen (or talk to) to your characters?
Back in college, my professor told me to always let me characters tell me what to do and that's the best advice I have gotten on writing to date.
What advice would you give other writers?
Everyone stresses how important it is to read, but I’d also add to take some literature classes. Writing classes are important, but I think literature classes are as well because it’s like learning from the masters.
How did you decide how to publish your books?
I was going to writing conferences and participating in freelance writing groups where I was meeting authors and seeing what paths they took to help me make my own decisions.
What do you think about the future of book publishing?
I think more people are going to self-publish based on what I hear in my writing groups.
What genres do you write?: young adult, middle grade, new adult, women's fiction
