About Kellie McAllen:
Hi! I’m Kellie and I’m a bibliophile! I’ve had a lifelong love affair with books. I love the fantasy and romance of immersing myself in a great story, so it was inevitable that I take the next step and become a writer. When I’m not reading or writing, I also love baking, interior decorating, and watching dancing shows on TV. I live in North Carolina with my wonderful hubby, 15 year old daughter, and two sweet kitties.
What inspires you to write?
I was inspired by a dream I had that ended up being the plot to my first novel. I couldn’t get the idea out of my head till I wrote it! After that, I found writing so enjoyable that I’m inspired to write because it’s fun and satisfying to create something.
Tell us about your writing process.
I start my book with a general idea of the plot in mind. I write a very simple outline on scratch paper, but much of how the plot plays out I let come to me as I’m writing. I do a lot of thinking in the shower about what is going to happen on the page that day! I set word count goals for each day but I usually just write as long as I can. Quiet writing time is pretty rare in my house. I usually let my characters define themselves. I may start with one personality trait and then just let that trait guide the development of the rest of the character.
For Fiction Writers: Do you listen (or talk to) to your characters?
I don’t really talk or listen to my characters – they’re not real! Does that make me weird as a writer?!
What advice would you give other writers?
Writing is only half the battle. Marketing your book is a whole nutha job! Expect to spend as much time on non-writing endeavors as you do actually writing.
How did you decide how to publish your books?
I tried to attract the interest of a traditional publisher, but after months of rejections and a lot of research about the hot new self-publishing trend, I decided to focus my attentions there instead. I might still be open to a traditional publishing deal if I was offered one, but it seems like I have much more control and earning potential selling my book myself.
What do you think about the future of book publishing?
I think print books will always have a place, but ebooks really are the future of publishing. I think it will get harder and harder for new authors to get published traditionally and the choices in the bookstore will dwindle to just the very best sellers. It may be hard for self-publishers to make much money from their work with so many new books available at the touch of a button, many free or very inexpensive, so I worry that the value of the written word will fall dramatically.
