What inspires you to write?
I like to imagine different things happening. Writing is my way of bringing those things to life.
Tell us about your writing process.
When inspiration hits, I just start typing away into a word doc. Sometimes I use an outline before I start writing the book. I have found that it helps to put down the characters (especially names and relationships) and the plot. Then I try to build from that.
For Fiction Writers: Do you listen (or talk to) to your characters?
Yes. I try to imagine them standing before me. I often think about how my characters would react to different situations. Some times I spend days thinking about what they would say or do.
What advice would you give other writers?
Keep going and keep trying. You may not succeed, but follow your heart.
How did you decide how to publish your books?
I wanted to publish with a publisher but as you know that is an extemely competitive and lengthy process. I felt so let down until my daughter suggested self-publishing. She has been my champion and helped me every step of the way. As far as advice, the only thing I can suggest is to stay true to who you are and the way you want to write. You will never be able to please everybody so think about what matters most to you.
What do you think about the future of book publishing?
I have not thought about that. It is something that is constantly evolving. Things have changed so much since I was young. I can only imagine how much it will change in a few years.
