About Joanne Guidoccio:
In 2008, Joanne took advantage of early retirement and decided to launch a second career that would tap into her creative side and utilize her well-honed organizational skills. Slowly, a writing practice emerged. Her articles and book reviews were published in newspapers, magazines, and online. When she tried her hand at fiction, she made reinvention a recurring theme in her novels and short stories. A member of Crime Writers of Canada, Sisters in Crime, and Romance Writers of America, Joanne writes paranormal romance, cozy mysteries, and inspirational literature from her home base of Guelph, Ontario.
What inspires you to write?
From an early age, I loved curling up with a book and losing myself in the stories. In high school, I looked forward to English class and dreamed of writing the great Canadian novel. Instead, I followed the conventional advice of the times and pursued a career in teaching. In my heart of hearts, I knew that someday I would resurrect that writing dream. Thirty-one years later, I took advantage of early retirement and devoted my second act to writing.
To date, I have written three novels: Between Land and Sea, A Season for Killing Blondes, and The Coming of Arabella.
Tell us about your writing process.
Once I have the spark of an idea, I let it percolate. While driving or performing routine tasks, I imagine the characters and come up with a title. Before starting to write, I plan the first three chapters and the ending. As for the rest of the storyline, I let it flow as I write.
What advice would you give other writers?
Experiment with different genres while discovering your own unique voice. Sign up for a creative writing course—online or offline—that exposes you to short stories, children’s and adult writing, creative nonfiction and poetry. Search until you find a warm, supportive environment where your words can flow freely. And, most important of all, enjoy the journey.
How did you decide how to publish your books?
Right now, I’m traditionally published. l like the idea of having “experienced” partners who can provide guidance and direction. I’m happy with my publishers–Soul Mate Publishing (paranormal romance) and The Wild Rose Press (cozy mysteries)–and plan to maintain both relationships. I may experiment with self–publishing when I release a memoir of my cancer experience.
What do you think about the future of book publishing?
I like to compare book publishing to a smorgasbord – something for every taste. Print, eBooks, audio and their future incarnations will survive. As for percentages, that remains to be seen, but I doubt that any single format will dominate the market.
