Interview with Author – JJ Toner

By Book Goodies

About JJ Toner:
I write WW2 spy stories and historical and contemporary detective stories, as well as some Science Fiction. I live in Ireland.

What inspires you to write?
I love to write the sort of books that I like to read. I haven't succeeded yet, but I'm getting closer…

Tell us about your writing process.
I take about 3-6 months to outline each book. I use Excel. I also do extensive research, sometimes travelling overseas to check out the details. It takes me 3-9 months to write a book, once I have the outline, so I'm not a fast writer!

For Fiction Writers: Do you listen (or talk to) to your characters?
I don't talk or listen to my characters, but they express themselves on the computer screen through their dialogue and actions.

What advice would you give other writers?
Read a lot in your chosen genre. Accept advice from more experienced writers in the spirit intended. Keep learning, and whatever happens, keep writing!

How did you decide how to publish your books?
As soon as KDP arrived, I dumped my bulging file of rejects from literary agents, and started self-publishing. If I was offered a traditional publishing deal now, I would turn it down: The publisher takes total control of the whole process, and it takes too long.

What do you think about the future of book publishing?
I think the future of publishing is here. I see very little change in the foreseeable future. Paper books have their place as have eBooks Trad and indie. Audio books are taking an increasing share of the market…

What genres do you write?: WW2 historical, detective stories, SF

What formats are your books in?: Both eBook and Print, Audiobook
