About Jennifer D’Angelo:
Jennifer D’Angelo lives in Eastern Pennsylvania, but she will always be a Jersey Girl at heart. She writes contemporary romance – Happy Ever After with an emotional punch.
She has published five novels and a small handful of very insightful blog posts.
When she is not writing, she is thinking about writing, procrastinating on housework, or burying her nose in a good novel.

What inspires you to write?
I am first and foremost a reader. I have always loved reading since I was a child, and am in absolute awe of writers with the ability to transport me into another world. As a writer, I love being able to control the outcome of a story, and I strive to connect with my readers through emotion. If they feel what my characters feel, I’ve done what I’ve set out to do.

Tell us about your writing process.
I start each novel in November, when I participate in National Novel Writing Month, and write for 30 days in the hopes of achieving 50K words by November 30th. I do not outline, I just wing it; but I do have a rough plot and the characters are developed somewhat in my notes. This gives me a skeleton to begin with. I then add and delete and refine until I have a sizable second draft of at least 80K words. It takes me several months (I still have a day job!!), but I do at least four more drafts before I’m ready to fine tune that final draft. I then start working on the synopsis (this takes weeks, and is my least favorite part because it’s so darn important and there’s a ton of pressure!) and working with my cover artist as well as planning my release date and the necessary promotion to go along with it.

For Fiction Writers: Do you listen (or talk to) to your characters?
Yes, of course! My characters tend to change my story to the point that my plot does not even resemble my original idea in the end! Characters for a writer are very personal. The worst part of writing is when I am reviewing my manuscript a final time, knowing that I have to say goodbye to these good friends I have spent months – or even years – getting to know.

What advice would you give other writers?
Don’t ever give up! Write every day, even if you don’t feel like it. Finish a project and revise and refine it, and put out something you are proud of. Whether you make money at your craft or not, the reward is in knowing you’ve created something special and were able to share it with others.

How did you decide how to publish your books?
I tried a little bit to go the traditional route, but it was a whole lot of work with very little feedback and long wait times in between. When I got serious about publishing, it was right around the time KDP was really starting to take off. I tried it, really liked the experience, and decided that self-publishing was the way to go for me.

What do you think about the future of book publishing?
I think it is a very exciting time for authors and readers alike. It can be frustrating at times because the market is flooded with content, and it is harder to be discovered. But it is all about marketing, and with a little creativity, and some hard work and research, an author who had no chance with a big publishing house can be catapulted to bestseller all on their own.
