About J.J. Bryant:
After spending years working in the fast-paced business world, I am happy to be living my dream of writing romance. I have my MBA and you may see me bring a little of that experience into the lives of my characters based on my “careers past.”

I grew up in New England and love hiking and biking with my family and my miniature schnauzer puppy.

What inspires you to write?
The people around me in my everyday life. Everyone has a story to tell, you can see it in their walk…it weighs on some people. For some their story makes them so happy you can see in their eyes just as they walk past you.

Tell us about your writing process.
The first thing I do before I even have a story is I have a character and I need to get to know them before I know their story. So I start sketching who I think the main character will be out at first–every detail you can think of. Their height, weight, hair color (think their dating profile), favorite books, family history, likes, dislikes, aspirations. Before you know it it has led me to a few more characters and then I sketch them out. From their I create an outline of my book. And then I just write, and then end of each week I go back and organize what I have so far into chapters and I do a quick edit and make sure my outline still holds true…and then I continue until I am done and the serious work begins…editing.

For Fiction Writers: Do you listen (or talk to) to your characters?
In away yes. I become really invested in them as people, I care about them and what happens to them and as they start to do things I disagree with I find myself in the role as supportive friend offering them advice I’d give to a friend in real life (sometimes good, sometimes bad).

What advice would you give other writers?
Don’t give up. Seriously. You have a story in you to tell, start writing and brainstorming don’t put it off. If you don’t publish this first book it doesn’t matter maybe the next one will be the one you want to put out there but start. Your story matters and it will resonate with someone or many someones out there.

How did you decide how to publish your books?
I had taken creative writing at NYU and spoken with a professor of mine on which path to take and what it came down to is how much control you want, what you want to learn from the process, how much time you have, etc.

For me as a former marketing and advertising executive I loved the idea of learning how to market my own books so that was a big plus in the self-publishing column—that might not be appealing for others. I also really enjoy connecting with other Indie authors and learning from them and being a part of the community.

What do you think about the future of book publishing?
There are a lot of options for readers but it is getting harder and harder to find what you want. Curated content whether it be self published or from a publisher is what I think is coming next…think of it like playlists for books from people who you like and respect.
