About G.S. Luckett:
Hello, I’m G.S. Luckett. I live with my wonderful wife and two sons outside Portland in the Pacific Northwest. I love to write. To create exciting worlds with action and adventure. I have studied Creative Writing and Screenwriting at both UCLA and Pierce College in Washington. My favorite genres in both book and film are action, fantasy, science fiction, and horror and that is generally what I write or a combination of those mentioned. I have won or placed in several screenwriting competitions. Page International, ScreenplayFestival, Screenwriting Expo, to name a few and I am currently adapting my award winning screenplays into genre novella series.
What inspires you to write?
I find inspirations in all sorts of places. Sometimes it is from a science article I might read on my news feed or a documentary I watch. Both of my sons watch a lot of History or Discovery and I will catch something they are watching and just work with it.
Tell us about your writing process.
I am a work-at-home dad and go to school, so I have a routine with flexibility worked in. I try to get most of my writing and marketing of my books as early as I can in the day. I outline and sketch characters all on my iPad and in Scrivener but try not to over pre-write. Once my pre-writing is done, I set a goal of 2500-3000 words per day and write everyday on a book. If I miss a day, I roll the numbers into the following days. I have a desktop in my office, a laptop for wherever, and iPad that I have to write with and change my locations where I write. I think it helps with creativity. I have even written while at the library by my house as a change of scenery.
For Fiction Writers: Do you listen (or talk to) to your characters?
I have a very overactive imagination, so yes I definitely talk to my characters and listen. I use of voice-recognition software for writing also. I think it lets me have a layer of editing by being able to hear the words said out loud, especially for dialogue. I feel to truly know your characters you have to play them out loud at some point, but that might just be me.
What advice would you give other writers?
I would tell you to stay at it. Keep at the craft of writing and always strive to better your work. Also, do not be afraid to get your book reviewed. While I value what my friends and family say about my work, there is nothing like having someone who only knows you for your writing and love it. I would also add that you need to learn to deal with criticism, constructive or otherwise. Constructive criticism can always help you improve and for the “otherwise”, you ca will n not please all the people, all the time. That is why you should always stay loyal to your fans.
How did you decide how to publish your books?
I chose self-publishing to be more in control of my writing. My background started as a screenwriter and while writing screenplays there were times that the whole process became held up when there was interest in a script, only to fall through. I also believe that e-books are changing the way people publish and that is here to stay. I like being part of that. I would advise new authors to always be relearning the process. I find out new information daily. Some of it’s good, some of its bad, and some of it you will love and you will incorporate it in your process. Simply put, use what works for you and what you’re having success with.
What do you think about the future of book publishing?
I believe the future of book publishing will lean more towards e-books. I don’t think that print books will be nonexistent, but the fact that e-books are becoming more interactive through their ability to join other social media outlets, display video and graphics like no print book can, and their portability they will dominate more of the market. I also believe this will affect traditional publishers. We will just have to see how they grow with it.
