About Chris Warren-Dickins:
I have published two non-fiction books:
Beyond Your Confines (published by Zero Labels in 2022), and
Beyond the Blue (published by Zero Labels in 2021).
My debut novel is out later this year.
I am a psychotherapist (licensed professional counselor) in New Jersey. I started out life as an attorney in the UK (having graduated from University College London in 1998), and since then, I was awarded a Masters in Counseling & Psychotherapy in 2010 (University of East London). That same year, I published research into male experiences of suicidal ideation and counseling interventions.
Aside from writing and psychotherapy, my true passion is parenting two elementary-aged children.
I find that writing, parenting and psychotherapy complement each other, as we are all continuously in a state of growth and change.
What inspires you to write?
Things that evoke a strong emotional reaction in me, particularly social injustice or situations where people are being 'othered' or scapegoated.
What authors do you read when you aren’t writing?
For fiction: Shirley Jackson, Alison Rumfitt, Haruki Murkami, and Lionel Shriver. For non-fiction: Irvin D. Yalom, Dan Siegel, Jamie Marich, Jim Knipe, and Stephen Porges.
Tell us about your writing process.
I have a stand up desk and I tend to pace and think, talk to friends and my partner, even my kids, and then hammer out stuff on my computer. I just discovered the dictate function on Word…not sure why I didn't notice this before. This is a game-changer for me!
For Fiction Writers: Do you listen (or talk to) to your characters?
Absolutely. As a therapist, I believe we have parts, so many of my characters are evolved (and unevolved) parts of me, or people I have met.
What advice would you give other writers?
Just go with where your heart and gut leads you, then leave what you have written for at least a week, and come back to review it. With this fresh perspective, you often go deeper than you ever imagined in the first attempt.
How did you decide how to publish your books?
I talked to other authors and decided that Zero Labels was the best way forward. It offers me complete freedom with which direction I want to go.
What do you think about the future of book publishing?
I hope we have as much freedom as we currently do.
What genres do you write?: For the fiction books: Queer gothic horror. For the non-fiction: Mental health, counseling and psychotherapy, and social justice.
What formats are your books in?: eBook, Print, Both eBook and Print
