About Cat Porter:
CAT PORTER was born and raised in New York City, but also spent a few years in Europe, Texas and the suburbs along the way. As an introverted, only child, she had very big, but very secret dreams for herself. She graduated from Vassar College, was a struggling actress, an art gallery girl, special events planner, freelance writer, and had all sorts of other crazy jobs all hours of the day and night to help make those dreams come true. She has two children’s books traditionally published under her maiden name. She now lives in Greece with her husband and three children, and freaks out regularly and still daydreams way too much. She is addicted to old movies, the History Channel, her iPad, her husband’s homemade red wine, really dark chocolate, and her Nespresso coffee machine. Writing keeps her somewhat sane, extremely happy, and a productive member of society.
What inspires you to write?
Music mostly, film, my own daydreams.
Tell us about your writing process.
I’m definitely a pantser, but I do eventually get a light outline together and put it on Scrivener and that keeps things focussed for me. I do work on characters sketches before and during my first draft which helps me discover connections and new things in my characters and the plot. I really enjoy the revision process after the beta readers have their way and my editor. I’ve learned that I need to have plenty of time for that process too. New and interesting textures come to light for me then, and I can’t rush it.
For Fiction Writers: Do you listen (or talk to) to your characters?
I listen as I write, and I talk out loud to myself to make sense of my plot and character needs. My kids make fun of me all the time!
What advice would you give other writers?
Tell your story.
How did you decide how to publish your books?
Once I discovered the joys of e-reading, I knew it was the best time and place for my adult books. I have two children’s books with a traditional publisher.
What do you think about the future of book publishing?
It’s a very exciting and yet ever-changing universe! Can’t wait to see what happens next- how publishers and indies will dance the dance to new rhythms!
