What inspires you to write?
Writing is my great love because I connected to it immediately through my first love, reading. The opportunity to tell stories like the great ones I read from The Hardy Boys and the Choose Your Own Adventures was a great joy. And I’ve never lost that fire. I like to tell/write stories because I love to read them. Publishing is like being a part of a special fraternity. Books are a powerful tool for educational development yet simultaneously can be pure FUN. The chance to get kids interested in reading is a true thrill for me and watching their eyes light up when I visit schools is priceless.
Tell us about your writing process.
As a kid the process was stream of consciousness and this is reflected in works such as The DANGER! Kids and Super C and Cool Dude which were both conceived over 20 years ago when I was 12. Currently by writing process regards studying film and reading books on the art of writing then applying the concepts to story lines I’m currently working on. Once it’s writing time, block off time and go chapter by chapter putting together these literary works. I am an internal outliner. I like to identify the key moments and begin forming the book from there.
For Fiction Writers: Do you listen (or talk to) to your characters?
I listen to my characters. I don’t ask them what they want to do, I basically let them decide. Sometimes when reviewing my material, I’ll notice certain action speak to a particular character’s arc more and I may change who does what. I think the author should have a good handle on the core characteristic of his major characters and HOW THEY FIT THE STORY. Once you have this and listen the characters do indeed speak.
What advice would you give other writers?
The key to finishing is STARTING! The key to starting is starting with… a short ebook. Ebook are known and expected to be shorter than novels in fact they can be as small as 20 pages long. By getting one completed work in, you will feel much better about the longer dream work that you want to publish. So start with a fun light ebook. It can be a memoir of your favorite moments from college or a celebration of something you hold dear, but that will get you going…
How did you decide how to publish your books?
When I found out about Amazon and Kindle’s opportunity too self publish; I had to jump on it. Worldwide distribution and a 70% royalty option. As a writer I could not pass up this chance to get in the game.
What do you think about the future of book publishing?
I think that it will continually get easier to publish but that because of this, there will become significant barriers to self published authors being respected. Which is even more reason to start now so that as the market continues to be flooded you’ll become a professional whose books and material stand out.
