About Ben Mariner:
Ben Mariner is the author of this book as well as The Many Lives of Zane Montgomery, which definitely sold some copies to some people. He currently lives in Denver with his wife and animals. He enjoys mozzarella sticks, dunk tanks at carnivals, and solving crime with his psychic powers and best friend/sidekick.
What inspires you to write?
Literally anything can inspire a story in my head. One of my favorite writing prompts is to ask someone for a person, place, and thing and then I work something up that includes those things.
Tell us about your writing process.
I fly totally by the seat of my pants when I write. The only absolute must when I sit down to write is Thunder Road by Bruce Springsteen.
For Fiction Writers: Do you listen (or talk to) to your characters?
Um…duh. How do you know what’s going on with your characters if you don’t talk/listen to them?
What advice would you give other writers?
Just keep working. You’re going to write a lot of bad stuff before you get something worth sharing. The first thing you sit down and write probably isn’t going to be good. Just come to terms with that right away so you aren’t disappointed later.
How did you decide how to publish your books?
Rejection after rejection after rejection just lends to self-publishing.
What do you think about the future of book publishing?
I think that the boom in self-publishing options is going to eventually completely change how publishing houses do business. Since big publishers are so selective, a lot of good work goes unnoticed and pops up in the self-published indie world. Eventually these houses will see that as a viable option and provide self-publishing options through them instead of other companies.
