About Ashley Scheller:
Ashley Scheller has always liked creating. Currently residing in Omaha with her family, if she isnβt sewing costumes inspired from medieval times or anime characters she is writing. Passionate about both hobbies, she loves to connect with fellow costumers and writers through social media. The Wielder Diaries: My Crystal is her first book and has planned an exciting trilogy for the title.
What inspires you to write?
As someone who works in education and loves fantasy in general, I write for my students because their sense of wonder and imagination is my inspiration. I want to write with them in mind, creating role models I hope would inspire them to become great.
Tell us about your writing process.
If I had to chose, I’m more of a seat of the pants writer, I guess? I don’t outline my story all that much if at all and let my story evolve and shift around until I see something that works and works well. When I start to see that I then leave those certain parts alone, they become my foundation build off of and expand. I never go beginning, middle, end either as each day I write is different and I write what I feel like writing about that day. If I don’t want to work on that character subplot I simply won’t because I know if I try to force it, my words will not be good. However, no matter what, I write something, anything, every day I possibly can. I strive to make writing a good habit, something I have to do before I go to bed.
For Fiction Writers: Do you listen (or talk to) to your characters?
I act out my characters as if I’m doing a one-man show. Lets say I have a duel scene going on, I would act out each role and put myself in their shoes to better visualize body language, emotion, actions and then the dialogue. I leave the dialogue last because I believe actions speak louder than words and find verbal exchanges come naturally when the emotional groundwork is set.
What advice would you give other writers?
Write every day. Write what you feel. Write what you believe in.
How did you decide how to publish your books?
I decided to use Ravenswood Publishing because of their flexible and non-intimidating appeal and could appreciate their individualized dedication to their authors.
What do you think about the future of book publishing?
I feel publishing is going in the right direction. To adapt with the advancements in technology and online social media I feel publishers and authors alike can reach more people than ever before and I see nothing wrong with that. π
