Interview with Author – Antonio Madrugada

About Antonio Madrugada:
(António Madrugada) – Writer, Poet, and Musician

PERSONAL BACKGROUND

André Gomes, known by his pseudonym António Madrugada, was born on September 21, 1990, in Caldas da Rainha, Portugal. Since April 2017, he has been living in Sofia, Bulgaria.
He graduated in Tourism from the TIAT Professional Course (Tourism Information and Animation Technician) with the IEFP of Santarém.

LITERARY CAREER

André is the founder of United Writers in Sofia, an organization and future foundation dedicated to supporting writers and aspiring authors. The initiative fosters creative collaboration and organizes cultural events related to creative writing, including plays, anthologies, and script development. His broader ambition is to expand the project globally under the name United Writers, creating a worldwide network and foundation for literary support.
Writing under the name António Madrugada—a persona inspired by people he loves—he specializes in poetry and short stories, particularly in the fantasy and sci-fi genres. He has been writing since the age of 13, initially inspired by a complex and challenging adolescence. While he started with fictional storytelling, he later evolved as a poet, crafting works that often carry multiple layers of meaning. His poetry reflects various facets of his identity: rebellious, heroic, historical, nostalgic, and patriotic.
He is the author of Life Itself Is a Paradox (A vida é, por si só, um paradoxo) and Poems Can Move Mountains (Poemas movem montanhas), both available on Amazon.

MUSIC CAREER

Beyond literature, André is also a musician, composing music and playing the electric bass. On April 28, 2020, he launched his first symphonic metal project, releasing two demos on Spotify with his band, Wildlink.
His father’s musical influence played a significant role in his development—he was taught piano from a young age and later learned to play the trumpet and trombone.

MEDIA AND PUBLIC APPEARANCES

Between 2012 and 2015, he worked as a radio presenter in Portugal and Romania. From 2012 to 2017, he also created a series of humorous sketches featuring a character named Dealer, a mischievous squirrel.
André has been featured in several interviews, including radio appearances on RTP’s Portugueses no Mundo and Apanhados na Rede, as well as a television interview on Kyriakos TV’s Manhãs na TV. In these interviews, he shared his experiences of living abroad, promoting, and defending his literary work.
INTERNATIONAL EXPERIENCE

His experiences abroad have greatly shaped his artistic perspective. From November 2013 to July 2014, he embarked on a journey across Europe, working as a volunteer in the Erasmus+ program (formerly EVS). Spending nine months in Romania as a European volunteer, he found inspiration in this period, which is reflected in many of his poems.

INSPIRATION AND PHILOSOPHY

A contributor to multiple poetry anthologies, André finds inspiration in his favorite authors and the simple yet profound moments of life. To him, life is "a living painting, constantly receiving new brushstrokes and tones every day."
As he puts it:
"Perspective changes at every second, and the image of life will forever remain incomplete."

CURRENT LIFE

Despite past socioeconomic challenges, he now feels happy and fulfilled in the country that welcomed him.

What inspires you to write?
I am a fan of the little things that happen when no one dares to care. I love to travel, and visiting Portugal, Spain, France, Austria, Romania, Bulgaria, Serbia, Hungary, Croatia, Bosnia, and Italy has left a mark on me. A simple homeless person, unique and sad, can inspire me to write in one way, while a strange pattern of behavior can inspire me in another.
Darkness and light, heroes and villains—these are common in all stories. But to me, those paradoxes are the key. In a certain way, even evil can save if we find its roots and try to heal it.

What authors do you read when you aren’t writing?
J.R.R. Tolkien, Stephen King, Terry Goodkind, and C.S. Lewis.

Tell us about your writing process.
You just need to believe that what you're doing is the best. When I have inspiration, I make sure to capture it in the moment—because after that, the essence is lost. That, to me, is the pure essence of writing.
Then, I let it rest for a while, like a dish prepared slowly. The outcome is something purely delicious—not something that simply melts in your mouth, but something that slowly sinks into your mind.
If writing does not have that effect on you, it means it was made in a rush. And if it still doesn’t have that effect, then it simply wasn’t meant for you.

For Fiction Writers: Do you listen (or talk to) to your characters?
I mourn for them when they are gone. I am their god, but a god who truly loves them all. I encourage them to take certain paths. They love and hate me for it.

What advice would you give other writers?
Never give up. The power of your words can change the course of the world. Let your readers laugh when you laughed, cry when you cried, and be a god when you failed to be one.

How did you decide how to publish your books?
Being thirteen, full of dark thoughts, living in a village in the middle of nowhere—I had to process all the bad things around me. So, I created imaginary people to convince myself I wasn’t an evil spirit. Writing about them put everything in a different perspective.

What do you think about the future of book publishing?
Stories should allow readers to travel to the world I’m in.

What genres do you write?: Poetry and fantasy

What formats are your books in?: eBook, Print, Both eBook and Print
