What inspires you to write?
Other books inspire me to write. When I read something well written, I want to produce something similar. I am inspired by people I meet who have incredible stories. I love to laugh and make people laugh, so anything I think is funny may make its way into my writing. My husband and my children inspire me with laughs all the time.
Tell us about your writing process.
I usually get an idea, a premise that starts with a what if question. Then I explore it for about 20,000 words. If I don't like where it's going, I work on something else, but if I'm pleased with it, I continue. While on vacation, we got to "mine" through "sluice" or sand to find gems. The first 20,000 words is where I find my gems that inspire me to continue writing. Then I go back and do character backgrounds and motivations, and outline it with a loose outline with distinct turning points and then discovery write in between those guideposts. If I plan the whole thing out, it's hard for me to write it because I feel the story is already told.
For Fiction Writers: Do you listen (or talk to) to your characters?
I am a visual writer. I see the characters in their unfolding scenes. But I do think they talk to me, whisper funny lines, moments that make me cringe. I feel like the universe is always telling us things if we have the ears to hear.
What advice would you give other writers?
If you're an aspiring author, I would say, write. Write as much as you can and finish your first book. It doesn't have to be good, or perfect, just finish writing a book with a beginning, a middle and an end. Then go back and fix what's needed later. Read. Reading is like fuel for your writing. Read everything. I write clean romances, but I read other genres. Also, continue to study your craft. Read books on how to write well. Get your work critiqued by entering a contest or join a writing group/critique group. We grow when we accept feedback. It helps us develop thick skin, too.
How did you decide how to publish your books?
I wanted to traditionally publish my book. I am a mom of three with a busy schedule. When I heard there were small presses especially for my genre, I decided to submit to them. I love my publisher and totally recommend a small press!
What do you think about the future of book publishing?
Audiobooks. These days sitting down to read a book is luxurious. Most people are busy. If I can double up my reading and exercise with an audiobook then I feel more efficient.
