Author Bio:
Though Alicia frequently finds herself on adventures with a sheriff, a man with a crossbow or two brothers and a fallen angel, in reality she is a normal teenage girl with no supernatural abilities, living in Canada and attending Concordia University. Her life revolves around more than books, tv and music however. She is a simple girl, loves spending time with her family and friends, but is mostly known for spending her days in the world of fiction. Being a fangirl is a full time occupation for her, and so is writing.
What inspires you to write?
Everything. The places I visit, the people I encounter, the music I listen to, the shows I watch, the books I read and the thoughts I have. Everything in my life is contributed to my writing in one way or another. Mostly though, it is my shows and books, just because I watch and read so many things that I am used to living in a fictional world for most of my day. So, being there all the time allows me to stay in that world easily, and so when I write, channeling that piece of me is so incredibly easy. Music has a big part in it as well, and it is safe to say if not for Avenged Sevenfold and Thirty Seconds to Mars, my writing would not exist. Before Avenged Sevenfold came into my life, I had never actually finished writing a novel, then once I started listening to them, they inspired me in such a massive way, not only with their talent but their morals and their strive towards their goals. They are my heroes, they inspire me every day, not just in writing but to be a good person.
Tell us about your writing process.
I don’t outline anything to be honest. I poor my heart out onto paper and see what happens. That ends up being my rough draft, I usually have one or two characters really developed and a basic plot line and everything else that happens really comes to me on the spot. I do not like planning because when I do I end up not liking a lot of the things, or I want to take my characters in a new direction. This way I am able to focus on going with the flow and there is a lot less pressure for my characters as well, no force. My only writing process is listening to music or watching a movie while I write, and drinking a lot of coffee.
For Fiction Writers: Do you listen (or talk to) to your characters?
I’m so emotionally attached to my characters it’s almost unhealthy. Every time something bad happens to them I apologize and need to take some moments to myself because I am so angry at myself, even though whatever I did is crucial to the story line. I hate hurting them, but I also love writing about them. There are two characters in particular which will have their first appearance in the next novel in my series that I am so completely head over heels for. I’ve worked with developing them for a few years and I have finally reached the point I want them at, and every song I listen to reminds me about them. I try to do them justice, to give them the things they need while also throwing in the obstacles. I treat all my characters like they are real people, because for me and readers, they are.
What advice would you give other writers?
Write all the time. I write fanfiction in my spare time if I’m too tired to get emotionally involved with my own story. Writing takes a toll, it really does, and it is a tiring job. Fun things to write, like fanfiction, poems or even little every day challenges really help. Also, make sure you have someone to talk to about your writing. I am lucky that I have a lot of family members who enjoy hearing about it, and my best friends have managed to put up with me. It’s important to have a good base, people to keep you standing, to make you feel good about what you’re doing.
How did you decide how to publish your books?
I self published my book, just because I did not want to wait for traditional publishing because it may or may not have happened. The reach is a little less and I have to do all the marketing myself, but honestly for me it is all about people just enjoying a good story, to find some love with characters.
What do you think about the future of book publishing?
I think that no matter what, books will always be safe. People can come up with whatever they want, but at the end of the day there is nothing like a good book. Books are magic. I don’t need a time machine, or a portal to another world, I can just open a book instead.
