What inspires you to write?
What truly inspires me to write is the deep, unshakable need to give voice to the shadows that many of us carry within. Life can be overwhelming, filled with challenges that seem impossible to overcome. For me, writing is a lifeline—a way to confront and untangle the dark threads of trauma, fear, and pain. It’s a cathartic process, where I pour my heart into the stories of characters who are battling their own demons, much like I have.
The thought that my words could reach someone who feels alone, offering them solace or a sense of connection, is what keeps me going. My books aren't just stories; they are lifelines for anyone struggling in the dark, reminders that even in the darkest times, there’s a way forward. They are about breaking the stigma surrounding mental health, showing that vulnerability is not a weakness but a strength, and that healing is possible, even when it feels out of reach.
Each page I write is a step towards not only my own healing but also a message to my readers: You are not alone, and your story matters.
What authors do you read when you aren’t writing?
Some of my favorite authors include:
– **Haruki Murakami** for his surreal and emotionally resonant storytelling.
– Toni Morrison for her profound exploration of identity and community.
– Sylvia Plath for her raw and powerful depiction of personal struggle.
– Neil Gaiman for his imaginative and genre-blending narratives.
These authors inspire me with their ability to intertwine deep personal themes with captivating stories, resonating with the core of my own writing.
Tell us about your writing process.
I’m more of a "seat of the pants" writer, which means I don’t usually outline every detail before I start writing. I prefer to let the story and characters guide me, allowing for organic twists and turns that might not come up if I had everything planned out in advance. However, I do keep a general roadmap in my mind—key scenes or emotional beats that I know I want to hit. This way, I have a direction without feeling too restricted.
When I do need to jot down ideas, I use simple notes, either on paper or digitally, depending on where I am. I might sketch out a brief character background or a plot point that I don’t want to forget, but these are usually just to keep the essentials in line.
Character development often happens during the writing process. I find that as I write, the characters reveal themselves to me, showing layers and complexities that I might not have discovered if I had tried to define them too rigidly beforehand. This approach keeps the writing process exciting and allows the story to evolve in ways that feel natural and true to the themes I’m exploring.
For others looking to find their process, I’d say don’t be afraid to experiment. Some writers need a detailed outline to stay on track, while others, like me, thrive on the spontaneity of discovery as they go. Find what works best for you and your story.
For Fiction Writers: Do you listen (or talk to) to your characters?
Yes, many of the characters in my stories are inspired by real people, though they are not direct representations. They often embody traits or experiences of individuals I've encountered or know. This helps bring authenticity and depth to the characters, making their struggles and triumphs feel more real.
I interact with these characters similarly to how I do with Luna. They evolve and reveal themselves as I write, often reflecting the complexity of the people who inspired them. This blend of personal experience and creative adaptation creates a richer, more immersive narrative.
What advice would you give other writers?
Embrace Your Truth: Write with authenticity. Draw from your own experiences and emotions to create stories that resonate deeply with readers. Authenticity connects on a profound level.
Allow Yourself to Grow: Don’t be afraid to revise and improve. Writing is a journey, and each draft brings you closer to your best work. Embrace the process and be patient with yourself.
Seek Feedback and Support: Engage with other writers and readers. Constructive criticism and a supportive community can provide invaluable insights and encouragement.
Prioritize Self-Care: Writing about intense subjects can be emotionally draining. Ensure you take care of your mental and emotional well-being to sustain your creativity and passion.
Stay Persistent: Writing can be challenging, but persistence is key. Keep pushing forward, even when it gets tough. Your dedication will pay off in the end.
How did you decide how to publish your books?
Deciding how to publish my books was a deeply personal journey. I chose self-publishing through Story.one because it provided the creative control and flexibility essential for bringing my vision for *Luna's Saga* to life. This route allowed me to oversee every aspect of the publication process, ensuring that my work was presented exactly as I envisioned.
I am also participating in the Young Storyteller Award contest, which is an exciting opportunity to gain recognition and connect with a wider audience. This contest is helping me to explore local and international bookshop distribution, and it could potentially enhance the availability of my books both online and for international shipping.
For new authors, I recommend exploring both traditional and self-publishing avenues. Self-publishing offers greater creative autonomy, while traditional publishing provides professional support and established distribution channels. Evaluate what aligns best with your goals and needs, and pursue the path that will best support your vision.
What do you think about the future of book publishing?
As an author, I believe the future of book publishing is incredibly dynamic and full of potential. The industry is evolving rapidly with advances in technology, changing reader habits, and the rise of digital platforms.
**Self-Publishing and Digital Platforms:** Self-publishing continues to grow, providing authors with greater control and direct access to their audiences. Digital platforms are expanding opportunities for reaching readers globally, often with innovative formats and interactive content.
**Hybrid Publishing Models:** Hybrid publishing, which combines aspects of traditional and self-publishing, is gaining traction. This model offers authors a blend of professional support and creative freedom, bridging the gap between the two worlds.
**Increased Focus on Diverse Voices:** There is a growing emphasis on diversity and inclusivity in publishing. Readers and publishers alike are increasingly seeking stories that reflect a wide range of experiences and perspectives, which is a positive shift for the industry.
**Enhanced Reader Engagement:** With the rise of social media and digital communities, authors can engage more directly with their readers. This interaction not only helps in marketing but also creates a more personalized reading experience.
Overall, the future of book publishing seems to be about adaptability and innovation, providing more opportunities for authors to share their stories and connect with readers in new and meaningful ways.
