Out of Mind, Out of Sight

Comments about cover design
It took me about a year to come up with the name for this book. It needed to be simple, yet distinct. In the shower one morning, the name came to me–a play on the words “out of sight, out of mind.” Since this was a book about Florida’s first mental institution–the Florida Asylum for the Indigent Insane (later to be renamed the Florida State Hospital)–it was in a very remote part of Florida away from the general population, and the legislature mostly forgot about those in the facility, I just transposed the words and it was perfect. The picture comes from the early treatment of mental illness when twirling devices were used in order to create “harmony” in the person’s mind and body.
Social Work with the emphasis on Mental Health is what I chose to get my college degree in. This, for me, would be a very interesting read and the title is so fitting for the book and cover 🙂
Like the exterior of a Frank Lloyd Wright building, this book cover makes you want to “tour” the inside. The best part is, when you do, you are NOT disappointed. The cover is insightfully inviting to the historical facts and mind-numbing reality of what once was the hidden and horrific world of too many of our fellow humans.
Sally has again come up with a very interesting and fitting title for her book. She is a clever writer who makes you want to dig into the contents of the book immediately after reading the title.
Very interesting cover. Certainly depicts the contents and feel of the book. Fascinating
Having experienced a state mental hospital in Illinois in the early 60’s as a nursing student, I think Sally has very accurately depicted the subject matter in both her title and the art work..can’t wait to read it!!
Sally, I am excited you have written another book. Having a relative in one of the Florida mental facilities a long time ago makes your book more real to me to read and find out what he and his family went through. The cover is self descriptive in enticing me even more. Will look forward in buying it. Carolyn Talley
How are you and Jim doing? think about you often and miss you at Wolf Laurel!
Outstanding! The cover reflects Sally’s attention to detail and creativity. It accurately addresses not only the topic of the book, but the context as well and does so in a manner that invites the reader into the text.
Very creative cover and title! Love the creepy picture and the subject of the book is very intriguing!
I watched how hard Sally worked on this amazing book by an amazing author. Great title, great cover, great book. Congratulations, Sally!
The title and cover give a perfect clue as to what is inside. How far we have come in understanding and treating mental illness. Thank goodness!!
A great title and I know it will be a great read. Can’t wait to get my hands on it, having been to the area covered by this book with the author.
Interesting and thought provoking. Great job Sally!
The title’s play on words makes the book appealing and is supported by the attractive graphics on the cover that depicti the insanity of conventional medical treatments back in the day… a highly creative cover supports the story inside!
I love a play on words, so the title is immediately appealing….and if you think about it, appalling. The cover is perfect. It manages to convey the era and evoke an eerie sense of hopelessness. The slight turn of the woman’s head and her overall demeanor give a sense of unspeakable sadness. It is most thought -provoking.
Excellent cover choice for the topic. I had the privilege of previewing the book, and it is as awesome as the cover.
A great cover on a great book! Anything that Sally Ling writes is well worth reading!
TERRIFIC! Thanks!
Like the tile. The cover is simple looking, but gets your attention about the subject inside those pages. Great job!
As an editor, I’m always warning my authors/writers not to use cliches, OR to at least be clever and invent a twist on a cliche. I rarely see this done because it takes a lot of thought, so I’m delighted to see Sally pulled it off! And then the simple design with the two big words really emphasizes it.
Sally worked very hard to come up with the name of this book and by golly she got it! The cover depicts what the contents are all about. Congratulations on a great job with this cover!
Nothing more enticing than to look at this cover and want to read the pages inside. Not only has Sally Ling provided a cover that “covers” it all, but ithe 6-word title is a perfect synopsis of the book…..oh, how true in so many cases where families have forgotten loved ones who were dconfined to the walls of a “state” hospital.
What an appropriate title Sally chose. Having visited the hospital many times I was always struck by how forgotten or “out of mind” some of the patients were as they wandered aimlessly around the halls. They had been shoved aside by their families or the judicial system and conveniently been put “out of sight” so they could no longer offend anyone with their problems. Excellent portrayal for the book’s contents.
Cover says it all.
I had the privilege of learning a lot about this book and Sally’s reason for writing it from Sally herself, and I must say I’ve been interested ever since. From the title to the images used, the cover draws your attention to a topic long forgotten by many people. Absolutely brilliant!
The author has cleverly used a medical device not recognized by the general public for the treatment of the patients in the creation of the cover for this book. Little known facts like this draw me into the book.
By far my favorite cover. Definitely the most intriguing.
I think this cover says exactly what the book is all about. No hidden message and the graphics are compelling.
Very Capturing to the reader.

What a fitting name for your book. It is the most interesting non-fiction book I have read in a long time. I loved the reading of it. Looking forward to more books by Sally!!
