A Ratchet City Tale 2: Dee’s Story by Rashima Wilson

Dees-Story-cover-CSDee, the hardscrabble hood rat from Ratchet City #1, is back with her own story…

Dee has always been a girl who knows how to hustle. From the time she could walk, she knew the value of a dollar – and how to work for it. You have to, growing up on the streets of Ratchet City.

A natural beauty, Dee’s childhood in the ghetto and a slew of foster homes has given her a hard edge that belies her appearance. Tough as nails and unwilling to take smack from anybody, she’s built to survive in a world where you’re either the player or getting played.

Still, even she may not be ready for what’s ahead when she hooks up with Dre, a much older man who knows how to get into a young girl’s head (among other things). But Dre’s not the kind of guy you bring home to meet Momma; he’s a man that trouble – dangerous trouble – follows around like it’s attached with a chain. And despite her ability to navigate treacherous waters, Dee may be getting in over her head.

What Inspired You to Write Your Book?
Just the things I saw around me on a daily basis as I grew up. I grew up with a constant awareness of street life and what it was like to constantly have to hustle.

How Did You Come up With Your Characters?
It wasn’t hard. They are examples of what I saw on a regular basis where I was raised. In fact, I still seem to see these same types of individuals everywhere.

I paid the bills and made sure that my mother was around when my case worker came over. I told her I would treat her to an 8-ball if she acted right while she was there. And just like an obedient child, she would sit there, answer all the questions, and give me praise and compliments like I was a perfect child.
During this time, I got to know Mr. Andre Brown much better. He was a solid dude, but I knew from jump I couldn’t play him; he just had a kinda style about himself that made it clear he was not to be trifled with. So from go I told him what was up – that I tricked for money with Charles but JJ had my heart; he seemed to be cool with it. He said he wasn’t looking for nothing solid anyway, and everybody had they hustle.
