A Crime Against One Person: HMO Nightmare by Edie Schmoll

What inspired you to write your memoir?
The annual slaughter of about 200,000 American hospital patients from medical errors–including that of my husband. Medical malpractice wreaks havoc on innocent victims and their families; and this crisis is ignored by our leaders and the medical community. Here is the shocking truth about the care in our hospitals and nursing homes

About your Book:
A patient enters an HMO hospital for outpatient surgery. The drill slips; and after bouts with septicemia (blood poisoning), cardiac arrests, malnutrition, and two additional surgeries (colostomy and feeding tube) during five weeks of hospitalization–followed by three months in a nursing home, to regain 30 pounds and the ability to walk a few feet–the patient comes home: mute, helpless, impotent, emaciated, and crippled. One disaster follows another: pneumonia, bedsores, stroke, blindness, paralysis, kidney failure, lung failure, tracheotomy, ventilator; and after six years of home care and continuous suffering, the battle is lost. This is a medical tragedy, a legal battle, and a timeless love story, with humorous incidents to relieve the horror, and help for the other victims: the tired home caregivers who face the Nightmare every day.

How did you decide how to publish your book and where is it published through:
Decided on self-publishing as time was of the essence. Very satisfactory results with Xlibris.

How do you see writing a Memoir as different from writing other genres of books?
This project was a necessity for my own healing, after six years of 24/7 labor, mounting financial disaster, rage against a doctor, the helplessness of watching my lover’s suffering, battles with the legal system, and the final loss of my heart and soul.

My second book (“Serenade – Word Songs”) was encouraged by American Mensa members after I won their 2008 National Poetry Award.

Third book (“Rain and Rainbows”) is a collection of short true stories.

Fourth: Holiday Picture Book for Children (“Holly, The Christmas Tree Fairy”), with my illustrations.

Next: “Music Songs”, collection of songs and lyrics, various genres (2014, in progress).

Author Bio:
Edie Schmoll is a noted southern California author, poet, musician, composer, artist and educator, with multiple awards and honors. She plays piano and organ for churches, clubs, hospitals and nursing homes, weddings and parties; and has about 20 years’ experience teaching classical, pop and religious music on piano, organ and accordion.

She is also a visual artist (oil paintings, watercolors, pastels, portraits, murals). One of her works was nominated by American Mensa in 2011 for their National Art Work Award. Current projects are a book of “Music Songs” and a CD of her classical piano solos (“Serenade”).
