What inspires you to write?
Since I was a child, I’ve been making up stories to entertain myself. My imagination is always working overtime, and when I’m not writing, I feel a bit lost. For me, few pleasures rival finding a book that hooks the reader immediately and won’t let go–so I strive to write that type of story. My novels are filled with forbidden love, mysterious hauntings, suspenseful secrets, and steamy romance.

Tell us about your writing process.
I am a plotter through and through. I cannot begin to write until I have an outline worked out in my mind. Luckily, I have a very good memory! As I go along, I create Goal-Motivation-Conflict charts for characters, as well as lists of reveals and bios of each character. I also use timelines for both past and present to keep things straight.

For Fiction Writers: Do you listen (or talk to) to your characters?
Dialog is my favorite part of writing, and I’m constantly listening to the conversations in my head. I’ll often start a scene just around the dialog exchange and go from there. When I’m in the middle of a novel, I’ll put myself into my characters’ viewpoints as I go about my day, just to see how they might experience something.

What advice would you give other writers?
Don’t give up…writing is not an easy task. Seek support through writing groups and classes, and learn all you can about the craft. There is always room to improve, and every critique makes your novel that much better.

How did you decide how to publish your books?
I felt very strongly about having the support and resources of a publisher at the beginning of my career. I focused on the smaller publishers, as they are usually more willing to take a chance on new authors, and agents aren’t always required for submission. My first two novels were published by an award-winning small press in New York. I decided to publish my third novel myself, for several reasons: I had an established fan base and wanted to have a 2014 release. Plus, my third book was a Young Adult novel, and my current publisher did not have an imprint for YA. I decided to go back to the traditional route with my fourth manuscript, and I’m now represented by a literary agency.

What do you think about the future of book publishing?
That’s a tough question, as things have changed so rapidly in the last ten years. I think there will always be a place for print books–I know I love the feel and experience of a nice hardcover book–but I’m also thrilled with the phenomenal growth of ebooks. Being able to store books on one device and download a new book instantly encourages reading, and that’s what it’s all about!
