I grew up to know my mom as a story teller. she does this often to sound warning to her children and grand once she notice any naughtiness or an act of delinquency. This was what actually piqued my interest to relate these moral stories
How Did You Come up With Your Characters?
I pick my characters from Watching wild life and also observing the traits of some domestic animals like the hen.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
My sincerest gratitude goes to my intelligent mum, Mrs. Felicia G, who was the creative think tank of this content. I never knew she was such an asset until I engaged her wisdom.
My thoughts about ways to educate young minds later gave rise to storyroute.blogspot.com, a platform for moral learning and laughter. I still felt that there was a void that needed to be filled, though. I remembered many long told stories my mum once told me. Those stories peaked my interest, and I was encouraged to find the memorable stories once again. Those stories finally became this book.
I would also like to add a special note of thanks to my blog readers who made me see that I have people that believe in me and stand behind me. Kudos to all my readers, including you

INTRODUCTION
Who on earth does not love reading stories? No matter how old we become, our fascination for stories remains intact. I can vividly remember the days as a kid when I would not want to eat or sleep, even when necessary. Grand mom seemed to have the cure for such behaviour. She infiltrated the mind of every child with her exhilarating stories narrated at meal times in order to hold the children’s attentions so that they ate more. My mom many times lulled me to sleep on her lap with a good story. Reminiscing about such scenes makes me see the value of storytelling. In Africa, we have old folktales that tell of times when animals could talk and how things were once upon a time. There is a plethora of such stories to read and enjoy in this book. Our classical folklores and tales attract persons of every age. These stories are meant to impart some moral lessons to its readers, be it children or adults, so any individual can apply what he or she learns in order to live life in a more meaningful manner.
The stories in this book pinpoint the author’s dislike for things like greed, pride, carefree attitudes, a child’s disobedience to parents, and impatience. Even more so, the stories vouch for tolerance, meekness, persistence, and good thinking and listening skills.
The pictures of the characters in these stories vary greatly in detail so that they can fit every climate and wear the dress of the African environment. They undoubtedly convey a picturesque impression of the manners, sentiments, and customs of Africans and their lifestyles. Indeed, as a generation, we truly love when we hear and see the old fairytales that are dressed in such beautiful and splendid fashions! Have a wonderful reading.
Chapter One
WHY THE CHICKEN IS MORE POPULAR THAN EVERY OTHER BIRDS
Once upon a time, there was a great war in the animal kingdom. The fight was between the birds and the other animals. Nwaka, the only son of mother vulture, prepared himself to go to war. While picking up his weapons, the mother vulture came back from her vacation and found her son frantically searching every nook and cranny of the house. “What is going on here, Nwaka, and where on Earth do you think you are going with these harmful tools?” asked the mother out of curiosity. “As you can see, I’m preparing to go to war,” he answered harshly. “What war are you talking about, Nwaka? You know you are my only son and I can’t afford to lose you,” cried the mother. “You are going nowhere!” she insisted and held him by the waist pleading. But Nwaka had already made up his mind. He insisted he had to go. After much of a struggle with his mother, she yielded and released her grip.
The eagle, dove, pigeon, chicken, duck and every other flying and non-flying bird, including Nwaka the vulture, all set off for the war.
After some days, the fight subsided, and the birds started returning home one after the other while their parents met them to welcome them at the juncture. The mother vulture waited patiently, but Nwaka never appeared. The mother vulture became worried, but continued hoping that her son would come home safely.
She stood and waited patiently at the juncture, asking other birds where they last saw her only son. She chanted and praised the eagle. “Oh, eagle, the greatest amongst the birds! Did you see Nwaka, my son, at war?” The eagle flew down in a sad mood and sang a dirge in her dialect, which was interpreted thus:
“Nwaka, the only son of the old mother vulture
How could death do this to you?
Leaving your mother in isolation
Oh, death—you did no well for taking from a mother of just one.
Please take heart, mother vulture, and accept my sympathy.”
The eagle left without the mother vulture saying a word. Believing her son to be on his way, she saw the dove coming back from the war and called out for her attention. “Oh, gentle white dove, the purest of all birds! Did you see Nwaka, my only son, at war? Is he on his way home?” the mother vulture asked faintly. The dove humbly came down to pay her condolences.
She sang the dirge:
“Nwaka, the only son of the old mother vulture
How could death do this to you?
Leaving your mother in isolation
Oh, death—you did no well for taking from a mother of just one.
Please take heart, mother vulture, and accept my sympathy.”
And she left.
The day was turning dark and nearly all the survivors had returned except Nwaka.
While the mother vulture waited expectantly at the juncture, she soon got tired of welcoming other warriors and listening to what she was hearing about her son. She thought it wise to wait to hear from one more source before she finally resigned to her fate. While she was still contemplating, she spotted the pigeon coming. She waved and said, “Oh, beautiful pigeon, the symbol of peace and harmony! Greetings to you! Did you see my son at war?” The pigeon shook his head in pity and sang the same dirge. The mother vulture remained silent and walked back home in sorrow.
The next day, all the birds gathered at the mother vulture’s house to sympathize with her about her loss. The eagle was the first to express his deep feelings to her, but after much consolation, there was no response from the mother vulture. The eagle was dismayed and stepped aside.
The duck expressed her opinion and feelings followed by the pigeon, the owl, the goose, the crow, the hawk and every other bird. They all expressed their feelings and sympathy, except the chicken who was not there. The vulture remained mute and uttered no words. She turned a deaf ear to all her sympathizers and remained quiet.
They all left feeling disappointed at her behaviour towards them.
While the other birds were walking along discussing mother vulture’s behaviour, they met the chicken who was making headway to the mother vulture’s house. “Where do you think you are going?” asked all the birds at once. “I am going to pay my condolences to mother vulture who
