What inspired you to write your book?
I cam up with the idea one day when we watched our family cat ‘Toby’ wander off down the garden path with the ginger cat ‘Red’ from next door. We didn’t think cats normally made friends with other cats and it made us laugh. t, why not write about what they could be getting up to? So I did!
About your Book:
Toby is a snooty, sophisticated black cat who is quite happy to rule his home and garden alone. However, when a clumsy ginger cat called Red moves in next door, everything changes as an unlikely yet comical friendship begins to grow! Toby, astounded at Red’s lack of basic cat skills takes him under his paw and the two animals soon find themselves involved in a series of hilarious escapades!
Whether it’s escaping from dangerous dogs, tackling great furry beasts or playing detective, Toby and Red make a fabulous team!
If you love cats and wonder what they might get up to when you’re not watching, you’ll love this book!

How do you see writing a book in the Pet Genre as different from writing other genres of books?
I think what makes it different is you have your inspiration right there in front of you. It is also exciting to be able to use your imagination and give animals human characteristics to make them come to life! What I enjoyed when writing about ‘Red’ was turning the traditional idea of cats on its head and making completely hopeless!
Advice to someone that is thinking about or currently working on a pet book
Watch your animals carefully and try to think about what could be going through their heads!
How did you decide how to publish your book and where is it published through:
I tried the traditional route but found it rather like a brick wall! Unless you know someone, I think publishing is incredibly hard to get into. So, one day when I heard that a friend of a my sister’s had gone down the self-publishing path with Amazon, I decided to give it a go. I found it pretty easy and so rewarding to finally see my words in print!
Author Bio:
Hi, I’m Kate Hughes and this is a little bit of information about me!
I was born in Worcester, but as my dad was a soldier, I spent the first few years of my life travelling to various places such as Germany and Malta. Finally my family settled down in Derbyshire, and apart from a few years away at college, this is where I have stayed!
As well as being a primary school teacher for over 20 years, I am a mum of three girls which keeps me pretty busy. My poor husband is completely outnumbered by females in our house, so it was good news when we found out that our cat wasn’t a ‘Maisy’, but in actual fact was a ‘Toby’!
My writing started years ago when I first started teaching; I used to produce scripts for the drama club to perform. However, it is only recently that I have decided to take it seriously. I recently had a couple of stories printed in my local paper which was fabulous! Up until then I had never seen my words published!
When I’m not tapping away on my netbook, I quite like to ignore the housework and do something more interesting! I enjoy cycling whilst listening to various 80’s and 90’s tunes and I love baking cakes. My cherry scones are a particular favourite in our house.
‘Mr Brown’s Suitcase’ was my debut novel. When I started writing it I intended it as an older children’s book, but I have been pleasantly surprised that adults enjoy it too! I have just finished the ‘Toby and Red’ books which are based on my snooty black cat and his ginger friend next door. I hope both children and cat lovers will enjoy them!
