How is Writing In Your Genre Different from Others?
The art of fiction is to invent a plot, and then create a cast of characters who will manifest the story in a believable and entertaining manner. With non-fiction, the plot, story, and characters are already in place; the art, for the writer, is to get out of their way and let them tell the story.
What Advice Would You Give Aspiring Writers?
I like the advice Hemingway offered when George Plimpton asked that question:
“Let’s say that he should go out and hang himself because he finds that writing well is impossibly difficult. Then he should be cut down without mercy and forced by his own self to write as well as he can for the rest of his life. At least he will have the story of the hanging to commence with.”
