In scribbled notes, in lists – scraps of paper tell a life. So begins this collection of short pieces and poetry – some funny, some tragic, and some just small moments in time. With each stolen glimpse into the lives of this diverse cast of characters, the reader cannot help but wonder how much is fiction and how much is heartbreakingly not. A stolen scarf, a stolen moment, a flower, a legend or two, and the ability of silence to communicate more than language – a melancholy air threads through this patchwork of characters on the edge of discovery.
Targeted Age Group:
18-35
With short fiction, it’s more about the moment, about the character – exploring and expanding just this tiny fraction of everything else that exists. It allows for an intimacy, but one that isn’t married to a fully structured story at all times. It allows us to breathe in this one moment, exhale, and move on to the next (or not).
What Advice Would You Give Aspiring Writers?
The same advice my dad gave me – if you want to write, make a habit of it. Practice writing every day. Every single day. Even if it’s just composing emails, take the time to really craft them.

She graduated from NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts with a BFA in Drama and a minor in Creative Writing. She won the 2nd Annual LJ Idol Contest in 2009. Her plays include Butterflies,This is Hell, Something On Your Mind, and her solo show Evidence, which played at Theatre Row in NYC. Her short story Mortar was recently published by Standard Culture. This Is What They Made It Out Of is her first book, but there are several more unfinished novels threatening to make themselves known. She helps run a popular blog on Buffy the Vampire Slayer (yes, it’s still relevant), Once More With Extreme Prejudice.
I had this collection of short pieces, flash fiction, a smattering of poems, which I’d written over the last several years, and wasn’t sure what to do with them. It was an unusual enough shape that I’d never be able to sell it to a publisher, much less to an agent. But with digital self-publishing, I get to choose the stories I tell, and the way I tell them.
